Yesterday, May 2nd, 2016, Uber Philippines started operating in areas east of Metro Manila. Added to the transportation service’s coverage area was the entire town of Cainta and selected areas in Taytay, Antipolo, and San Mateo.
As part of the expansion, an “East surcharge” amounting to 60 pesos will be added to the fares of passengers going to the aforementioned east of Metro Manila destinations. According to Uber, the surcharge is to make the expansion economically sustainable for partner-drivers, and to account for potential additional costs like fuel and lost/idle time due to traffic when driving to the newly-added routes. It should be noted that the surcharge only applies when going to Cainta, Taytay, Antipolo, and San Mateo, and not when taking a ride from the said areas.
For passengers who’d like to know if their destination is included in the new coverage areas, Uber advises that the destination be entered before hitting the ride request button. The app will then indicate if the entered destination falls within the expanded coverage areas or not.
